Gallery Former Mayor of Palo Alto visits Sandyford to explore twinning opportunities

On Monday, CEO of Sandyford Business District (SBID), Ger Corbett was delighted to welcome former mayor, and current councillor of Palo Alto, Patrick Burt to the district. Mr Burt was on an exploratory visit that focused on understanding the potential opportunities for the home of tech to twin with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area, which Sandyford Business District is part of.

Sandyford Business District shares numerous similarities with Palo Alto; Palo Alto is a bustling suburb in Santa Clara County, south of the city of San Francisco. It is adjacent to Stanford University and home to hundreds of Silicon Valley technology companies. SBID is Ireland’s largest business improvement district, located a short distance from Dublin City and within close proximity of University College Dublin (UCD). It is also the preferred location of many Fortune 500 companies whose European headquarters are based in the district.

Accompanied by CEO of DLRCC, Frank Curran and former-Cathaoirleach of the Council Cllr Mary Hanafin, Mr Burt toured Leopardstown Racecourse and was subsequently treated to some hospitality at the facility’s Penthouse Suite. Here he got the opportunity to meet with executives of SBID and got to hear from some of Ireland’s most inspiring leaders, to include former MD of Microsoft Ireland, Cathriona Hallahan, CEO of the Beacon Hospital, Michael Cullen, CEO of Leopardstown Racecourse, Tim Husbands and Leo McBride of Digital X. All four endorsed the District and the broader Council area, the work being done by SBID and why Sandyford is the priority choice for their business.

CEO of SBID, Ger Corbett said “A potential twinning of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area and Palo Alto is an exciting prospect for Sandyford. The district has undergone profound change in recent years which is testament to the vision shared by many custodians of our business community over decades. Their ambitions are only matched by SBID’s current objective to make Sandyford the best place to work, live and run a business in.

We are thrilled to have Patrick Burt join us so we could brief him on the enormous synergies between our respective areas, and also our points of difference, which would perfectly complement a collaboration.

The visit is testament to the hard work of the executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council who in collaboration with the board of SBID seeks to firmly mark the
presence of the district on the international map, as we seek to build a resilient future for the businesses in the area.”

Sandyford Business District CEO speaks about green mobility at key international conference

Ger Corbett, CEO of Sandyford Business District, Ireland’s largest business district spoke at the Smart City World Congress in Barcelona on November 15th, providing an Irish perspective to the event which has been bringing together leaders and innovators from cities from across the world for over a decade.

Mr Corbett presented SBD’s insights on the key area of promoting green mobility and Sandyford’s learnings from participation in the EU-funded Smart Cities Marketplace “Small Giants” Initiative.

Joining Mr Corbett at the panel discussion were Mr Leo Huberts, policy officer with the European Commission, and Tomaz Lanisek a representative from Kranj in Slovenia, a fellow participant locality in the programme, as well as speakers from the e-mobility industry, and the investment community involved in the initiative, represented by Ms Phoebe Smith of the Smart City Innovation Fund.

The EU “Small Giants” initiative has brought together a group of cities that are collaborating to drive sustained changes to mobility habits. The discussion addressed the needs, intentions, and benefits of working with smaller cities as well as the actions that investors, industry and institutions can take to support demand aggregation amongst cities and the value that can result from such initiatives.

The discussion was both timely and forward-looking, examining how the energy crisis could encourage people to move towards more sustainable modes of transport but also underlining the importance of setting the right incentives for the long-term.

Beyond the EU programme, Sandyford Business District has taken the lead in Ireland in promoting sustainable mobility in the Sandyford area; working with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to roll out eCargo bikes for local businesses, as well as hosting an Innovation Summit at Leopardstown Racecourse which showcased a range of eMobility options.

Commenting after the discussion, Mr Corbett said: “I was delighted to represent SBD at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona where I got an opportunity to discuss green mobility and the EU ‘Small Giants’ Initiative. SBID has benefitted from the support and expertise of many valuable partners across the EU and Ireland, and this has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the innovation and leadership of the district’s businesses in embracing the future of transport.

Working with Government, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, our members and the network of Smart Cities and business districts, we have been able to make significant gains. Our ambitions are best encapsulated by our recent initiatives; such as the Green Charter under which we are pursuing the objective of becoming Ireland’s leading sustainable business district.

Being part of the Smart City Expo World Congress has given me an unrivalled opportunity to gain further insights for SBID to leverage in its sustainability activity,
while sharing best practice based on the district’s own experience.

SANDYFORD BUSINESS DISTRICT PARTNERS WITH BALLINA-BASED, MARY ROBINSON CENTRE, TO DRIVE SUSTAINABILITY IN THE DISTRICT

On the back of the partnership, the Association is set to launch a number of green initiatives targeted at making the district an increasingly sustainable place to live and work

The largest Business Improvement District (BID) in Ireland, Sandyford Business District, has today announced a partnership with Mayo-based centre for change, The Mary Robinson Centre, to empower and enable the district, its businesses and residents to become increasingly sustainable through a number of green-focused initiatives.

Aimed at helping companies to gain a clear understanding of the business case for climate action, and to help them to take stock of where they are on their sustainability journey, the Association through its partnership with The Mary Robinson Centre, hopes to see local businesses continue to build on their commitment to reducing their environmental impact.

In order to empower the local business community, SBD will introduce a number of initiatives. Key among them include;

The establishment of a Green Committee with overall responsibility for the strategic, sustainable development of the area

The introduction of a Green Charter aimed at getting businesses to pledge to undertake three initiatives, of their own choosing, which will make their business more sustainable

Allocation of “Biodiversity Champion” status where businesses pledge to work on projects that are fully sustainable and aligned to the objectives of the area

Creating solutions to decarbonise the district and prioritise multi-model sustainable transport options

Devising and implementing further bio-diversity projects, akin to Pocket Forest in the area

Driven by the Executive Committee’s desire to inspire more sustainable solutions for the business community, Sandyford Business District has a long-held record of introducing progressive initiatives aimed at solidifying its credentials, as a leading business district in Ireland. This newest strategic partnership with The Mary Robinson Centre, is testament to the foresight of the leadership of the district.

Ger Corbett, CEO of Sandyford Business District said:

“As part of our ambition to make the area a leading sustainability district, we are delighted to announce a strategic partnership with The Mary Robinson Centre to support our members to become more climate aware, and to help them to take steps to reduce their climate footprint.

Working with the Centre makes sense on a number of levels, as we endeavour to develop a green eco-system in Sandyford, that prioritises local action within The Mary Robinson best-practice framework.Driving sustainability initiatives in tandem with the stewardship of the Centre, Sandyford Business District will provide a green-model for other BIDs, towns, and villages to follow. With our shared desire to make local areas and communities more sustainable and enjoyable for everyone, we look forward to working together, with local stakeholders, to drive the necessary change, as we continue our national journey to carbon neutrality by 2050.”

Project Manager for The Mary Robinson Centre, Susan Heffernan said:

‘The purpose of The Mary Robinson Centre is to drive change, inspiring individuals and communities to take the actions necessary at a local level to achieve the changes necessary at a global level to address the climate emergency.

The success of Ballina’s Green Town initiative, and now Sandyford BID’s sustainability initiatives, are important steps towards fostering the behaviour changes at local level. The Centre is committed to supporting these projects and collaborating with communities as they work to achieve carbon reduction.’

About The Mary Robinson Centre

Gallery Jim Power Economic Report on Sandyford Business District 2021

Significant contribution of Sandyford BID highlighted in newly published Economic Report.

Sandyford Business District (SBD) has today published an economic report on the district, prepared by one of Ireland’s leading and best-known economic analysts, Jim Power. The report is a comprehensive economic analysis of the area that charts the business improvement district’s (BID) overwhelmingly positive contribution since its inception in 2017. Looking beyond its current term, the report also makes a number of recommendations to ensure the future sustainability of the area, as an economic powerhouse in a national and regional context.

Sandyford Business District economic contribution

€1 billion gross wage bill generated in the district

€21.6 million commercial rates generated in the district

1,000 companies - 13 Fortune 500 companies

26,000 employees

5,000 residents

Notable achievements between 2017 - 2021

Through its governance structure, the quality and the motivation of the team behind the BID, and the strong collaboration with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the report finds that Sandyford Business District has successfully led the evolution of the area in a myriad of ways:

  • Transforming four business parks from a low-density light industrial area to an aspiring world-class mixed-use district with a broad sectoral offering;
  • Attracting world-leading businesses to include Microsoft, Mastercard, Google, Facebook, and ICON;
  • Enhancing office occupier activity; which stands at 33 per cent in the Dublin suburban office market and 12 per cent of the wider Dublin office market;
  • Delivering strong engagement strategies with important stakeholders that has resulted in increased influence and delivery of objectives across a range of priority areas to include business attraction, business promotion, mobility, environment and place-making;
  • Continuously making improvement to the physical infrastructure and the physical environment;
  • Delivering targeted supports for businesses to include cutting-edge education and training, management capability tools, policy updates and engagement with policy-makers.

Key findings of the Economic Report

Among the key findings contained in the economic analysis are the following:

  • Sandyford Business District is a very important national economic driver because of its ability to attract foreign, private and public capital which delivers a quantum of employment, commercial rates and an impressive gross wage bill which derives benefits for local businesses;
  • Sandyford Business District is a high-tech, knowledge-driven commercial cluster that helps attract new businesses into the area, while simultaneously enabling growth in indigenous SMEs;
  • Impending changes to the global corporation tax regime pose a challenge which will require a strategic approach to the future development of Sandyford Business District;
  • The Sandyford Urban Framework Plan 2016-2022 and the impending Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Development Plan 2022-2028 will be key to the future development of the district in order to accommodate the projected quantum of growth in the working population;
  • A strategic approach to land use and density is required to provide flexibility in building heights, mixed uses, increased living accommodation and support amenities to facilitate the expected doubling of employment numbers in the district;
  • The district has a growing, highly educated and diverse workforce that has increased by 20% since 2016 with a proportion of people with third-level degrees double that of the national average.

District Executive, Conor Battigan said “Having the benefit of this Economic Report is tremendously helpful in measuring the district’s progress as we work to provide the businesses in Sandyford Business District with greater economic opportunity. It gives us all a chance to take stock of the achievements of our business community in recent years, and of the opportunities that still lie ahead as the difficult pandemic period draws to a close.”

“It is by investing in and building on the success of vibrant, open and sustainable business and residential communities such as Sandyford, that we can build Ireland’s
resilience to economic, environmental, geopolitical and health shocks in the coming decades. At SBD we will continue supporting our members in seizing
opportunities while simultaneously seeing off challenges, and we look forward to working in partnership with local and national government in those efforts.”

Gallery SBD Launches LIFT Ireland in Sandyford Business District

Sandyford Business District is pleased to be the 1st Business District to partner with LIFT Ireland and launch the platform to businesses in the District. As organisations are constantly looking for ways to improve culture, we are delighted to bring to the District, LIFT’s leadership process, which has proven to embed good leadership values and behaviour, enhance employee engagement, build better relationships, improve positive leadership, and improve communication and teamwork - particularly relevant now with so many colleagues working from home.

Sandyford Business District is offering 25 free places to businesses to become the FIRST LIFT Ambassadors in the area.

We would like to invite you to become one of the first 25 Ambassador Organisations to LIFT Sandyford Business District at a FREE bespoke event for the District on Friday March 12th from 10am to 12 noon. One person in each of the companies awarded this free place will be trained as a Facilitator and can go on to lead the LIFT process within their company. See below for details on how to register.

At the event you will also hear from Barry Dowling, Consulting Director - Covalen, who are based in Sandyford and have been using the LIFT Leadership process since 2018 with an opportunity for a Q&A.

WHAT IS LIFT?
LIFT Ireland is a not-for-profit initiative aimed at increasing the level of positive leadership in Ireland. LIFT, which stands for ‘Leading Ireland’s Future Together’, was built on a desire to change the country for the better by changing the way people lead, both in their personal and working lives. It does this through its peer-learning based roundtable process. LIFT’s programme is being rolled out nationwide via a volunteer facilitator network with a goal of reaching 10% of the population by 2028. LIFT is a force to improve the quality of leadership in Ireland – from the kitchen table to the clubhouse, and from the classroom to the boardroom. The learning process used by LIFT is based on principles that have been used successfully for many years.

HOW LIFT WORKS

  • The LIFT process takes just 30-40 minutes 1 day a week for a total of 8 weeks. The sessions are called roundtables.
  • Over Zoom, sharing LIFT materials through screen-share,
  • LIFT facilitators bring 4 or 5 people together at each roundtable to individually self-reflect on a particular LIFT personal leadership theme, how it shapes their character and how it impacts the way they interact with others.

There are 8 key personal leadership traits which form the initial programme and there is an option to complete a further 3 values which have been added as a result of research done during the pandemic:

The 8 key values are:

- Listening

- Positive Attitude

- Respect

- Competence

- Dedication and Determination

- Empathy and Understanding

- Accountability

- Honesty and Integrity
The 3 extra values are:

- Mindfulness

- Resilience

- Innovation and Adaptability

  • At the end of the 8 weeks, each of the participants can become facilitators and then lead their own groups. From here LIFT can grow exponentially.
  • As the number of people participating in LIFT roundtables grows, the inner leader in individuals, groups, organisations and communities results in real positive impact throughout the country. Small actions create great change, one individual at a time.
  • The LIFT process is easily implemented. No particular qualifications are required to be a facilitator (other than the initial half-day training), and anyone can facilitate - there is no need to be a coach, mentor etc.
  • LIFT is safe. LIFT roundtables have no comment, no judgement and no advice - they are opportunities for self-reflection and personal ownership only.

THE IMPACT OF LIFT

A number of businesses in the Sandyford Business District are already involved and living ‘LIFT’ with huge benefits to their employees and organisations. As part of the larger national LIFT Ireland initiative, impact levels are monitored carefully through online surveys that participants take with positive results.

96.8% of people say that they have improved their understanding of good leadership through LIFT (729 responses)

89% of people say that they can point to positive behaviour change that they attribute to LIFT (725 responses)

With the scale of the shock caused by the Covid-19 pandemic to both businesses and consumers, Sandyford Business District (SBD) proposed a suite of measures in Budget 2021 which will help alleviate the short-term impacts on member companies. The submission contained a raft of initiatives which will help businesses to withstand the challenges they are facing while retaining jobs and ensuring the vibrancy of the District. The Government has taken on board a number of our proposals which were subsequently delivered on Budget day to include:

  • The extension of the commercial rates waiver to the end of 2020.
  • Covid-19 business supports in the shape of
    • The Covid-19 Restrictions Support Scheme which provides businesses with up to €5,000 per week where they have been forced to close their premises.
    • Debt warehousing provision for small and medium sized businesses which will be extended for a period of a year with no interest.
    • A Recovery Fund of €3.4 billion to stimulate the economy after the economic shocks of Covid-19 and Brexit.

  • €1.3 billion for spending on expansions and improvements to national, regional and local roads which will create thousands of jobs. Our next objective is to ensure monies will be allocated to the District to enhance access and circumnavigation of the area.
  • €150 million under the Urban and Regeneration Development Fund in 2021.
  • Progression of the Project 2040 programmes including the BusConnects Programme, MetroLink and the DART Expansion Programme. MetroLink and Dublin BusConnects Core Bus Corridors will advance with planning permission to be sought from An Bord Pleanála.
  1. Brexit

  2. While the pandemic has been the most immediate challenge facing businesses this year, Sandyford Business District asked Government to consider the looming threat of Brexit and the challenges this will pose to Irish business regardless of the outcome of negotiations. The 2021 Budget submission emphasised the need for support for member companies that must adjust their trading relationships and invest in business operations in order to handle the new customs arrangements. SBD also sought meaningful assistance in the pursuit of new markets and the streamlining of the work visa and work permit procedures. The Government has heeded our calls and announced the following supports:
    Sandyford Business District 2021 Budget submission also highlighted the need for Ireland to maintain a competitive tax regime to facilitate an economic recovery post the coronavirus. SBD contended that central to this is the need for further reductions in the tax burden which would help spur on the recovery of specific sectors, such as hospitality, which have been severely impacted by the pandemic. SBD also pointed out that the pandemic has not resolved the housing crisis and that relevant taxation relief is one of the keys to resolving this problem. The Government’s approach to taxation in Budget 2021 has committed to delivering on a number of SBD’s proposals and has taken a similar direction.
    In the area of employment Sandyford Business District emphasised the high cost of wages to employers, stressing that Government needs to be attuned to this in both its Covid-19 schemes such as the Pandemic Unemployment Payment and the Emergency Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS), as well as when setting a minimum wage. SBD also raised concern about the high rents faced by employees in Dublin and urged intervention in the housing market. On Budget Day, the Government announced the following supports:
    Sandyford Business District also put forward proposals the Government should take to enable all sectors of society to participate in efforts to protect the environment. The 2021 Budget submission stressed the congestion problems in Dublin and urged Government to take further action in improving public transport services. SBD also called on Government to encourage pedestrianisation of streets during weekends by local authorities. These proposals also included a small practical change that would enhance public awareness of Building Energy Ratings by publishing them alongside sale prices on the website of the Property Services Regulatory Authority. In terms of financial measures included in Budget 2021, worthy of mention in this policy area are:
    Sandyford Business District 2021 Budget submission emphasised the dire impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the Irish motor industry and called for tax measures to help the industry survive and protect its 50,000 jobs. SBD also sought measures to support the purchase of hybrid and electric vehicles through the improvement of charging infrastructure. The Government has made some significant changes in this area, most notably with an overhaul of the Vehicle Registration Tax and Motor Tax. Measures of interest include:
    In advance of the Budget, Sandyford Business District also highlighted the potential of crime to seriously hamper economic development with retail and hospitality businesses reporting up to 3% shrinkage a year as a result of this activity on their premises. While welcoming the ongoing assistance of the Garda Bureau of Community Engagement, SBD asked Government to provide greater resources to enforcement agencies to fight crime. In Budget 2021, Government has taken some decisive steps in this direction.
    Sandyford Business District is committed to ongoing lobbying for measures that positively impact the various phases of construction to include planning services, building materials, homewares and all associated activity. With the Government’s Retrofitting Scheme introduced in the July Stimulus, SBD highlighted the effectiveness of same in spurring activity in the construction industry, creating jobs and training opportunities. The SBD Budget submission expressed its commitment to this. Government has committed to the following:
  • €350 million has been allocated across the various governmental Departments for spending on challenges related to Brexit with €100 million earmarked specifically over 2021.The amount is aimed at providing for necessary infrastructural and staffing costs to facilitate trade compliance with EU customs obligations and to underpin the protection of national and EU borders.
  • Funding for Enterprise Ireland to help increase their promotion and marketing activities on behalf of Irish indigenous businesses.
  • Funding under the Government’s €3.4 billion Recovery Fund which will provide targeted supports to deal with economic shocks caused by Brexit.
  • Investment in ICT processes to help digitalise immigration procedures.
  1. Taxation
  • VAT on hospitality businesses has been reduced from 13.5% to 9%.
  • The corporation tax rate remains unchanged.
  • The Help-to-Buy-Scheme has been extended at the €30,000 level to last until the end of 2021.
  • The Residential Development (Stamp Duty) Refund Scheme has been extended to 31 December 2022.
  • The earned income tax credit has been raised by €150 to bring it in line with PAYE tax credits.
  1. Employment
  • The continuation of the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme until the end of 2021, if necessary.
  • A minor upward adjustment of the minimum wage amounting to 10c. The relevant Employer’s PRSI and USC thresholds have been raised to match this change.
  • €3.3 billion spend on housing, marking a 24% increase on 2020.
  1. Enhancing the Environment
  • The Government’s commitment to the introduction of longer trams.
  • €1.8 billion funding for sustainable transport, cycling, walking and greenways with €360 million to be spent on walking and cycling projects.
  1. Motoring
  • A new Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) structure of rates and bands will be introduced from 1 January 2021 for new vehicles and imports to align with the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) emissions system.
  • A new motor tax rate table will be introduced to align with the move to the WLTP emissions system and it will apply to cars first registered in Ireland from 1 January 2021. Changes will also be made to the existing motor tax rate tables that apply to cars first registered in Ireland between July 2008 and December 2020.
  • This overhaul of VRT and motor tax is expected to lower the cost of hybrid and electric vehicles and lower the motor tax burden on most vehicles manufactured after 2008.
    • Grants to support the installation of home chargers and public chargers are to be continued, and additional supports for charging infrastructure at key strategic destinations to enhance overall network accessibility to be introduced - the SEAI will be introducing support for destination chargers which can be provided at locations such as hotels, shopping centres or places of employment.

  1. Law and Order
  • The Department of Justice is to receive funding to recruit up to 620 trainee Gardaí in 2021; and to recruit in the region of 500 Garda staff to fill administrative and back-office functions to facilitate the continued redeployment of trained Gardaí to frontline policing;
  • Revenue’s funding is to be increased by 6.5%.
  1. Proposed Retrofitting Scheme
  • €286.5 million to be allocated for retrofit activity.
  • That the National Home Retrofit Scheme will be available to homeowners who want to upgrade the energy efficiency of their home to a B2 rating.
  • Funding to provide for 1500 new places in retrofitting courses.

Gallery Public Meeting - Stillorgan Reservoir

Stillorgan Reservoir Public Meeting

Sandyford BID CLG held a public meeting on Thursday 2nd May at Union Cafe, Beacon South Quarter. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the campaign to urge Irish Water to allow the residents and employees in the area access to the landscaped Stillorgan Reservoir land. As you may be aware, Irish Water is currently upgrading the Stillorgan reservoir, one of the last remaining open reservoirs of its size in Europe . The project involves draining the Gray reservoir and the construction of a new covered reservoir and control building. Once the new covered reservoir is operational, the Upper and Lower reservoirs will be decommissioned and a landscaping masterplan will be completed.

As it currently stands Irish Water plan to landscape 15 acres of the site and keep this area locked away from the public. Sandyford Business District is seeking to gain access to this landscaped site and for it to be deemed a public open space for use by residents and employees in the area for important health, social, environmental and economic benefits.

If you believe there is a lack of public amenities in the area, please show your support by signing out petition at Stillorgan Reservoir Petition

Gallery Signage Launch

Sandyford Business District Signage Launch

Sandyford Business District in collaboration with Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is delighted to announce the launch of a new signage programme for the district.

The mission of the Sandyford Business District is to ensure the region is a world class destination in which to work, reside and visit. The rationale behind the new scheme is to clearly identify the four business parks (Central, Sandyford, South County & Stillorgan) which
form the commercial area and unify them under the designation of the Sandyford Business District. This project has been a key objective of Sandyford Business District and, following a detailed consultation/design process started in 2017 and completion of the tender process last year, the signage is now in production with the initial phase now underway.

The scheme comprises:

§ ROAD signs: stainless steel signs, increased in size, to replace the existing blue road signs. The number of locations is increased from 54 to over 80.

§ ENTRANCE signs: Seven newly created ‘banner’ signs are being erected at key ingress points throughout the district clearly identifying the four individual business parks unified under the designation of Sandyford Business District.

§ GATEWAY signs: The three existing substantial signs (Leopardstown Interchange, Drummartin Link Road and St. Raphaela’s Road) have been totally renovated and the graphics changed to ‘Sandyford Business District’.

The signage scheme is being produced and installed by Gaelite Signs, Furze Road, Sandyford Business Park. #ThinkSandyfordFirst!

Sandyford Business District and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, in support of this strategic business location in South Dublin, have invested nearly €200k in this
project and will be adding additional branding and wayfinding signage in the coming months to complement this scheme.
